What goes into a brick garden wall that lasts?
Brick wall installation in Bonita Springs is building a freestanding brick wall for your yard, garden or property line, laid out to stand up to sideways force and capped so rain runs off it instead of soaking in.
Most people call me with a spot in the yard picked out and a rough height in mind, and that's a good place to start. The price moves with the wall's length and height, how thick it has to be, how many piers it needs, the brick you pick and how much ground work the footing takes. The schedule turns on the weather and on whether your lot needs a permit before we dig. I'll measure it all on site and put your figure in writing.
How our brick wall installation goes
A garden wall stands or falls on its layout and the cap on top, so that's where I start. I walk the line with you, check the ground and work out where the wall needs piers, which are brick columns built into it, or a wider base so it won't rock in a strong wind. Then our crew digs out and pours the footing, lays each course to a string line so the wall goes up straight, and keeps the joints full so water has nowhere to sit. We finish the top with a proper coping, the cap that sheds rain off the wall, because a bare top lets water run straight down into the brick. When we're done, we clean up and haul off the dirt.
Some yards call for a different material or a different fix. If you want a natural look, or stone piers and caps with brick between them, that's stone masonry, and we can mix the two. If you already have a brick wall that's straight and solid but the mortar's crumbling, you probably don't need a new one, and brick pointing will usually do the job for a lot less.
Brick wall installation in Bonita Springs and the Gulf weather
If your property sits seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line, on the beach side of it, any change to the property needs a City Beach and Dune Permit from the Bonita Springs Community Development Department, and a new wall is a change. Farther inland, I won't guess whether a garden wall needs a permit. I check with the city or county office for your address before we plan the start date.
Down here the weather is hard on brick, with rains that can last for hours and come with high winds, so the piers or wider base I plan carry more weight on a long wall than they would up north. High-wind areas call for stronger brickwork, so ask me which mortar strength we're planning for your wall and I'll tell you why. We're based in Bonita Springs and work north into Lee County and south into Collier County, and we plan for the same storms on jobs in Estero and Naples.

How much does a brick wall cost near Bonita Springs, FL?
Brick and masonry work in the Fort Myers area usually costs about $9 to $28 per square foot. Where your wall lands in that range comes down to its height and thickness, how many piers it needs, the brick and coping you pick and how much footing work the ground takes. I'll measure on site and give you your own number in writing.
How tall can a brick garden wall be if it's only one brick thick?
One home services site says a freestanding wall one brick thick can typically reach six to eight feet high. The thinner a wall is, the more its stability against wind and other sideways force has to be planned, which is why I plan piers or a wider base on a tall single-thickness wall. I'll tell you on site what your wall needs for the height you want.
How do I keep water from soaking the base of a brick wall?
Slope any paving next to the wall away from it, or leave a drainage strip along its foot where the paving can't slope. That keeps the lower courses, the bottom rows of brick, from staying soaked. When we build beside a patio or walk, I check which way it drains before we lay the first course.
What is the best way to pick brick for an outdoor wall in Florida?
Compare bricks first on how well they hold up outdoors, because a garden wall needs brick durable enough to take weather and exposure for the long haul. Color and texture matter too, but a good-looking brick that can't take the weather is money thrown away. I'll point you to brick made for outdoor walls and we'll pick from there.
Can you build a brick wall where my yard is higher on one side?
Yes, but the wall may need a membrane, a protective layer built into it, where the ground is higher on one side. That layer keeps water and salts in the soil from moving into the brick from the high side. I check the levels when I walk the line and tell you if your wall needs one.
How long does it take to build a brick wall?
The time on site turns mostly on the wall's length and height, how much digging and footing work the ground needs, and the weather. Heavy rain stops us laying brick because fresh joints wash out, and summer storms here can cost a day here and there. I'll walk you through the schedule when I come out.
