What goes into a retaining wall that holds up in Bonita Springs?

A retaining wall holds back soil so a slope stays where you want it. Retaining wall construction in Bonita Springs usually means a wall of concrete blocks stacked dry, without mortar, that holds the ground mostly with its own weight. Most of the work is in the planning and the base. The stacking goes quickly once those are right.

At Select Bonita Springs Masonry & Concrete, a wall call is usually about one of three things. A yard is slumping toward the house or the neighbor, a bed washes out every time it rains, or an old timber wall has gone soft. We're based in Bonita Springs and build in the cities around it, north into Lee County and south into Collier County. The price moves with the wall's length and height, the material, how much digging and fill the slope takes, and whether an old wall has to come out first. The schedule depends on the wall's size, the utility marking before we dig and any permit the job needs. I measure it all on site and put your number in a written estimate.

How we handle retaining wall construction

Water building up behind a wall is what pushes it over, so we plan the drainage before we pick the block. I walk the slope with you and look at where the rain goes now and where it should go once the wall is in. Before anyone digs, we get the underground lines marked through 811, the call-before-you-dig service, and that takes a few days. Then we dig out, pack a firm base and set the first course dead level, because every course above it follows that one. We stack the block and fill behind it with drain rock so water has a way out instead of pressing on the wall. The soil goes back in layers, and we compact each one. We cap the top, grade the ground so it sheds water and clean up before we leave.

Sometimes the wall isn't the only masonry in the yard that needs attention. An older brick or stone wall that's worn but still sound may only need masonry restoration instead of a new wall. I'll tell you straight which way I'd go. If the new wall opens up a level spot for sitting outside, we can work fireplace installation into the same plan, on ground we've already compacted.

  • Dry-stacked segmental block

This suits most yard slopes, because the blocks lock together without mortar and hold the soil with their weight. It handles a little ground movement without cracking, and it's simpler to build than a mortared wall.

  • Mortared block with a finished face

This suits a wall that's part of the house's look, like a raised patio edge or a planter by the entry. We lay concrete block in mortar and finish the face to match. That costs more, but the wall looks like it belongs to the house.

Retaining wall construction rules in Bonita Springs

The city of Bonita Springs counts filling, grading and digging as development. A retaining wall that brings new fill onto your lot falls under its rules. When fill is added to a residential lot without a building permit, the city requires an application for a limited review development order. If your wall needs fill hauled in, plan on that step. When a job needs a permit, we check with the city's Community Development Department or the county office for your address and file it ourselves. We keep you posted, and work starts once the permit is in hand.

Lots here are usually flat enough that a few inches of grade decide where the rain ends up. That's why we set the drain outlet and the finished grade before the first block goes down. We plan walls the same way on jobs in Estero and Naples.

Bonita Springs retaining wall questions

How much does a retaining wall cost near Bonita Springs FL?

Retaining wall construction in the Fort Myers area usually costs about $15 to $45 per square foot of wall face, depending on the material. That's the going rate in the area, not our price. Quoted prices for poured concrete walls there often leave out tearing out an old wall, curves, stamped concrete or brick, taller walls and difficult ground. If your job has any of those, ask how the quote prices them. I list them on the written estimate.

Why does drainage matter so much for a retaining wall?

Water that can't get out from behind a wall builds pressure and adds load the wall has to carry. One wall-block maker's manual names poor drainage as a leading cause of retaining wall problems, and it means drainage that's missing or isn't enough for the site. Ask every installer you talk to how the wall will drain. We'll show you our plan at the estimate.

Does my retaining wall need an engineer?

Some do. The industry installation guide says its steps are general and that a qualified engineer should evaluate the conditions on your particular site. Another installation guide says the builder should know the local code rules for retaining walls to judge what engineering a job needs. Ask about it early. If I think your site calls for that review, I'll say so at the estimate.

How close to the property line can a retaining wall be in Bonita Springs?

City rules put a retaining wall at least one foot from the property line. Other sections of the city code set how far a wall must sit from water and how tall it can be, so check those with the city for your lot. We mark the wall's line off the property line before we dig.

How long does it take to build a retaining wall?

An experienced crew typically sets 300 to 500 square feet of block wall a day, according to an industry design manual. Measure your wall's face and you'll have a rough idea of the stacking time. The utility marking, any permit, the digging and the base all come on top of that, and I'll walk you through those at the estimate.

What is the best way to choose between block and timber for a retaining wall?

Pick concrete block if you want the wall to last. An industry design manual says wall blocks resist cracking and hold up where treated timbers and railroad ties splinter and decay. Timber can cost less to start, but you'll pay again to replace it, and that's why we build in block.
