What goes into building a new walkway?

Walkway construction in Bonita Springs, FL is building a paved path to your door that's planned and laid out, dug out, set on a compacted base and held in with edging so it stays flat and even underfoot for years.

Most people call us because the walk they have is cracked, sunk or sitting higher than it should at the door. The price moves with the size of the walk, whether the old concrete stays or goes and which pavers you pick, and the schedule turns mostly on tear-out, base work and any permit, so the written estimate I give you after looking is where your own number comes from. If the driveway is next, driveway pavers done at the same time can match the walk.

How we handle walkway construction

I start by checking whether your old concrete is solid enough to pave over or has to come out, and I check where the finished walk will land at every door and step, because a path that ends up proud of a threshold is how people trip. Before anyone digs, we check with the utility companies so we don't hit a pipe or a wire. Then our crew digs out and compacts the soil, spreads and compacts the base, sets edge restraints so the pavers can't creep sideways, levels the bedding sand and lays the pavers, and we clean up before we leave.

A walk rarely stands alone. If it runs past a planting bed you want held back, we can put a brick wall along it, and where it meets a porch or garden, stone masonry steps and borders can finish it off.

  • New pavers on a fresh base

This suits a walk with no concrete worth keeping, or no walk at all yet. It's the most digging, but every layer under the pavers is new and built for the job.

  • Pavers laid over old concrete

This suits a walk that's still solid and flat, since it skips the tear-out. It raises the surface, so it only works where your door thresholds and steps leave room.

  • Permeable pavers that drain

These have open joints that let rain soak down through the walk instead of running off it. They fit some yards and not others, so I check yours before I suggest them.

Walkway construction rules in Bonita Springs

If your property sits seaward of the 1978 Coastal Construction Control Line, the city requires a Beach and Dune Permit for any addition or change to it, and a new walk is an addition. For other lots, the city's Community Development Department is the place to ask whether your walk needs a permit, and we check with the city or county office for your address, file any permit ourselves and keep you posted, with work starting once it's in hand. The city also counts lot coverage as the share of your lot taken up by buildings and structures, so on a lot that's already close to its limit, that's worth raising too.

We're based in Bonita Springs and work in the cities around it, north into Lee County and south into Collier County. Most walks we're called about are poured runs from the driveway to the front door that have cracked or lifted into a lip, and we see the same on jobs in Estero and Naples.

Bonita Springs walkway questions

Can pavers go over my old concrete walk?

Yes, if the concrete is sound. One paver maker says solid concrete can take a paver overlay, but wide gaps, heaving or sections that rock mean the walk should be rebuilt on compacted stone, and the same maker names poor drainage as the most common problem, so the old slab should already shed water away from the house. When I'm on the fence about a slab, I'd rather tear it out than cover a problem you'd pay for twice.

Will a paver walkway crack like poured concrete?

Usually not the same way, because the joints between pavers help cut down the cracking you see in a solid concrete slab. Pavers can also take foot traffic right after they're laid, so you aren't waiting on a slab to cure before you use the walk.

Do permeable pavers work in my yard, and what upkeep do they need?

They can, if your yard drains well. Florida's UF/IFAS Extension says permeable pavement suits light-duty uses like walking paths, on soil that drains well with the seasonal high water table, the highest the groundwater rises in the wet season, at least 2 feet below the system. For upkeep, UF/IFAS specialists suggest keeping grass clippings, landscape material and leaf litter off the pavers and pressure washing the gaps where material builds up.

How much does a new walkway cost in Bonita Springs?

Your walk's price comes from its size and from what has to happen under it, so I give you a number after I've seen it. Tearing out old concrete, building up the base, adding steps or curves and choosing a pricier paver all push it up, while a straight walk over sound concrete keeps it down. I write the figure down for you on site.

How long does it take to build a paver walkway?

That turns on how much ground work your walk needs, more than on laying the pavers. Tearing out an old slab, building the base, waiting on a permit if one applies and the weather all set the pace, and I'll talk you through the timing for your walk when I come out.

How do I choose a contractor to build a walkway in Bonita Springs?

Start by asking which Florida license they hold, because a certified contractor license covers the whole state while a registered one only covers the cities or counties where the contractor holds a certificate of competency. Ask too whether the job includes geotextile, a fabric laid between the soil and the base, since it's an optional step and not every bid has it.
